Are Elderly Behind the Wheel a Threat?

Look at the roads and highways these days. We see people zooming by at 70 mph or even faster or we see people going the speed limit causing traffic to back up for miles. People like these are the ones who are most likely to cause accidents. Who are the people behind these wheels? They are everyday Americans like you and I. However there are some Americans who are more likely to cause accidents than you or me and those are the elderly. The elderly people who get behind a wheel these days have one of the highest accidents rates, second to drunk drivers. As we age our body tends to slow down in reacting to situations, such as hitting the break or turning the wheel as quickly as possible to avoid being hit or hitting a car. We also tend to lose our hearing. This is very important when it comes to driving on the road. The most important sound you have to listen to while driving are cops or ambulance sirens that are trying to get by. Of course the most important than thing that tends to go is our sight. Sight is the number one important factor when it comes to driving. I’m sure many of you figured that out for yourself but the elderly do not seemed too. I read a news article my last year of High School that was about a 17 year old girl named Katie Bolka who was leaving her house and was on her way to school. While crossing an intersection Katie was struck and killed by a driver who had run a red light. Katie was killed. The driver of this car was a woman who was in her mid-late seventies. Now I know many of you think that it is not fair because that scenario has happened to other drivers on the road, but what about this story. A cashier in a clothing store almost lost his life when an elderly woman ran her car through the front door and rammed it into the counter. Luckily the no one was hurt. Last fall in at a California Farmer’s Market an elderly man had mistaken his gas for his brake and sped his car into the market killing over five people and injuring several others.

With all of these incidents I believe that any person who is over the age of seventy should be required to take their driving and vision test every one to two years.  A few states have already put this law into effect and the number of driving accidents has dropped rapidly. Now, I am not blaming the elderly for the cause of all these accidents that are occurring today and I am not saying that they should not be able to drive. I am sure many of you have grandparents that drive fine and that is great. I just feel that the roads could be more safe if we know that the person next me on the highway has all the abilities to drive. With this people can feel safer when they are driving down the highway or just to school like Katie.

I will miss him

I have had a few people ask me already why I was not in class on Thursday. So I’ll tell you. After working all weekend I returned to campus with another friend of mine. We were both talking about how our weekends went and having a good time. After arriving back to Sweetland, the rest of my friends and I were talking about our weekends. Then I received a phone call from my friend Kevin back home saying that he had seen cops and ambulances going towards my friend Joe’s House. Now I knew something that not too many people knew. Joe was suicidal. I went on Facebook to see if anyone knew anything, but there was nothing. I posted a text saying if anyone knew anything please tell me. Not even a half hour later I got another call from my friend Chad saying that Joe had killed himself. I felt like I was going to puke, I ran outside to get some air and called my parents. My mom works at the hospital and she would know. She called me back and told me it was true. My knees gave way onto the grass. I could not breath. Luckily I have friends here and they were all asking if I was alright or if I needed anything. I went home Wednesday morning and went to the wake and the Funeral was Thursday afternoon. If anyone knows anybody that is struggling with depression please do anything you can to help them. I just wish I could have seen Joe one more time. The last time I saw him was my graduation party and the last word I said to him was “bye.”

Holiday Season too Soon

You know what really makes me itch? When there are commercials and radio broadcasts celebrating Christmas when it is not for another two months.  I already have seen five different commercials and heard a few over the radio too. Come on people! It’s not even Thanksgiving and Halloween barely started when the commercials began to air. Last year while driving to school I turned on the radio and heard Christmas music being played. Thanksgiving wasn’t for another two weeks! I walked into both K-Mart and Shopko and both of them had or were setting up their Christmas displays. That was Halloween Day. This has just been bothering me for a few years now. I understand how stores want to create a good display before Black Friday. But is it necessary to be playing music during the second week of November? That is what makes me itch.

The Thing that Maked me itch returns!

It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to blog on Tumblr, but that’s not important right now. The homecoming dance was not as fun as I thought it would be. Last Thursday’s dance was the exact same dance as it was before two weeks earlier. I thought that dances were suppose to have a variety of music. Instead this DJ only played rap (a.k.a. crap) and hip hop the whole night. Sure he played “Crazy Bitch” by Buckcherry, but that was the only rock song of the night! Throw in some country such as Big and Rich’s “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” or “Fishin in the Dark.” Even some more rock would do. Everybody likes AC/DC’s ‘Shook Me All Night Long” or Def Leppords “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” This has just been on my mind ever since High School. I know I should get over it, but dances are more fun when the beat of the music actaully changes for once.

You know what makes me itch?

People who write the movie reviews. Almost every single time I read a movie review in magazines such as “People.” I disagree. An example would be the movie review for “Transformer 2.” The writer titled the review “Clang, Clang, Clang.” She wrote on how the movie was too focused on the machines and not enough on the humans. Hello! The movie is called “Transformers 2” it suppose to be about them not the humans. I figured since she grew up in the 80’s that she would have watched the cartoon. Most movie writers of the movie reviews never inform us on certain details. Other ones movies would include “The Taking of Pehlam 123”, great movie, bad review. If you know of any other movie reviews that you do not a agree with please share.
